Rüdiger’s Roma back in second place

AS Roma returned to second place in Serie A after Germany international Antonio Rüdiger’s side eased past AC Florence to win 4-0 on matchday 23 and leapfrogged SSC Napoli in the table.

Former Wolfsburg man Edin Dzeko put the hosts in the lead in the 39th minute with his 16th goal of the season. Federico Fazio and Radja Nainggolan both found the back of the net after the break before Dzeko hit the nail in the coffin with seven minutes to go.

Juventus still occupy top spot with 54 points. World champion Sami Khedira’s team can extend the gap at the top of the table if they beat newly-promoted side FC Crotone on Wednesday.

Last-minute victory for Draxler

World champion Julian Draxler and French champions Paris St. Germain kept themselves in the title race with table-toppers AS Monaco. The club from the capital beat OSC Lille 2-1 after AS Monaco beat HSC Montpellier 2-1 as well.

PSG lie three points behind the league leaders. Edinson Cavani was on target for PSG and Nicolas de Preville thought he had earned Lille a point with his equaliser four minutes from time but Lucas hit a last-gasp winner in the 92nd minute to secure all three points.

Barca make it through to cup final without ter Stegen

Reigning champions Barcelona reached the final of the Spanish Copa del Rey. Luis Enrique’s side’s 1-1 second-leg draw with Atlético Madrid was enough to see them through after winning the first leg 2-1 in Madrid.

Luis Suarez fired the two-time cup winners into the lead at the Nou Camp. Atlético gave themselves a chance after Kevin Gamerio’s 83rd minute equaliser having missed a penalty four minutes earlier. Both Sergi Roberto and Suarez saw red for receiving second yellow cards in the second half, as did Yannick Carrasco for the away side.

Who Barcelona will face in the final on 27th May will be decided on Wednesday as Deportivo Alaves and Celta Vigo fight it out in the other semi-final second leg. The venue for the final of the competition will be announced by the Spanish FA in due course.

Barcelona were without Marc-André ter Stegen on Tuesday. The Germany goalkeeper, who is the club’s number one in the league and the Champions League, was on the bench and was replaced by Dutch keeper Jasper Cillessen.
