Rüdiger: “Some teams will underestimate us”

The Confed Cup offers Germany’s players the chance to show Joachim Löw what they can do on the world stage just one year before the World Cup in Russia. Antonio Rüdiger and Lars Stindl spoke to DFB.de about their opening game of the tournament on Monday against Australia, the opposition and their hopes for the tournament in Russia.

Antonio Rüdiger on…

… his first impressions: “We have very, very good conditions to train in here. The most important thing for us is to be able to prepare ourselves sensibly for our games.

… the importance of the Confed Cup: Last year wasn’t great for me because of my injury, which is why I am even more excited for the Confed Cup. It is a very good chance to prove yourself. It is an honour to play for Germany.

… the system Germany play: Most teams play with a back four and that is fairly routine. If you play with three at the back, then the team has to prepare themselves for that very well. But for me personally as a player, nothing changes.

… Racism in Italy: We are in the year 2017 now. This in my opinion should not be happening in our time and it still does. Unfortunately, not a lot is being done to tackle this in Italy. I can’t understand that. You have to battle against it and be hard in cracking down on it.

… the match against Australia: Our group will not be easy. We face three teams that are mentally very strong. Our first opponents, Australia, will try everything to beat us and ultimately win the tournament. We don’t have all our players here but that in itself could be an advantage. Some teams will underestimate us.

Lars Stindl on…

… using the video assistants: We as a team are very open to having video assistance. If it means the game is fairer, then I see this as a sensible move but it should not disrupt the flow of play.

… his experience with the national team: I’m really glad to be here. I want to show the quality I’ve got in the next few games, collect experience and at the same time of course give a good impression so that I can be here again.

… the position he plays in the team: I see my role as being a striker. I want to create space for my teammates and if possible create chances, just as I do when I play for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

… everyone’s role in the team: My task is to help the team work collectively. I try to use my experience from club football but there is no exact formula for what every single person’s role is. We have a good balance in the team.

... competition within the team: Obviously every player wants to leave a lasting impression but the most important thing is to represent Germany well and to have a successful tournament.
