Ronaldo named Europe's best again - Martens pips Marozsan

Just like last year, Real Madrid’s talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted the UEFA men’s Player of the Year. The Portuguese 32-year-old was in the running for the accolade alongside his argentine rival Lionel Messi (30-years-old, FC Barcelona), as well as the italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (39-years-old, Juventus). This is the fourth time he has won the award, and in combination with his further triumphs in 2008, 2014 and 2016, this achievement means he is now the single most successful player in its history.

The votes were compiled from 55 members of the media from UEFA member associations, alongside the coaches of teams who competed in the Champions League and the Europa League. Toni Kroos was the highest placing German, after the former world champion came in fifth place.

European champion Lieke Martens takes home the women’s award

Lieke Martens, who helped the Netherlands to European championship glory, has been voted UEFA’s women’s Player of the Year. The midfielder was up against Germany’s captain Dzsenifer Marozsan, who was also invited to the Grimaldi forum in recognition of her outstanding achievements. Also nominated was Pernille Harder from Denmark.

Additionally, the italian legend Francesco Totti won the president’s award on Thursday. UEFA president Alexsander Ceferin presented the trophy to the 40-year-old in recognition of his prestigious career, which he called to an end this summer after 25 seasons with AS Roma.

The best players of last year’s Champions League were also decided upon in the ceremony. World champion Manuel Neuer lost out to italian Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) as the best goalkeeper, while Luka Modric (Real Madrid) was chosen as the best midfielder. Modric’s Madrid teammates Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the final two awards as best defender and forward respectively.
