Rode: "I want to repay their faith"

Rode: Every footballer wants to play, but it’s not always that simple, especially at Bayern. I’ve had to wait for my chance but hopefully I’ve shown my potential again. It’s important to make the most of the opportunities given to you.

Question: Sporting director Matthias Sammer has praised your mentality...

Rode: I mean, it’s not always easy when you’re on the bench and not playing a lot, but you have to remain positive and give it your all in training. The lads appreciate that and have supported me throughout – they came straight over to me after I scored as well as after I had set up the second goal.

Sebastian Rode made his first Bundesliga start of the season for FC Bayern München yesterday and he crowned the appearance with a virtuoso performance that saw him score and create a goal against Darmstadt 98. After the game he spoke to DFB.de about the game and his personal aims for the season.

Question: Mr Rode, you had only played eight minutes in the Bundesliga before yesterday. How did it feel?

Sebastian Rode: I’m delighted – it was great to score and get an assist but obviously the victory was the main thing.

Question: Did the way the game wait help you, seeing as you haven’t featured much this season?

Rode: Going in front early on helped for sure. Darmstadt played simple football, but they do it well. They had a few chances too. We stepped it up after the break and deserved to win. I’ve waited patiently for my chance this season and have given it my all in training. The head coach has seen this and I aim to repay his faith in me.

Question: What did Pep Guardiola say to you after Kingsley Coman made it 2-0?

Rode: He didn’t say much to be honest. He was delighted that we scored and happy that I got the assist.

Question: Do you think the performance will boost your chances of starting more games? Last season you featured 23 times in the league and netted twice.

Rode: Every footballer wants to play, but it’s not always that simple, especially at Bayern. I’ve had to wait for my chance but hopefully I’ve shown my potential again. It’s important to make the most of the opportunities given to you.
