Ribéry and the shoelace prank

It wasn’t just his free kick goal against Chemnitzer FC that drew attention to Franck Ribéry. The Bayern München star’s prank on referee Bibiana Steinhaus also did the rounds on social media. DFB.de has compiled all the other weird and wonderful stories to come out of last weekend’s DFB-Pokal first round games.

CHEEKY FRENCHMAN:

Before Franck Ribéry took his 79th minute free kick in the game against Chemnitzer FC, the Frenchman played a little prank on referee Bibiana Steinhaus. As Ribéry was placing the ball he quickly undid the match official’s shoe lace. Steinhaus reacted calmly, and retaliated with two gentle jabs to the ribs before letting the free kick go ahead. Oddly enough, Ribéry then converted the free kick to make it 4-0.

SPARKLING EYES:

Christoph Matt could hardly keep the smile off his face following the match of his life. The right-back may have seen his side FC Rielasingen-Arlen lose 0-4 to Borussia Dortmund, but the atmosphere in the stadium afterwards was still enough for Matt to be taken aback. “It’s absolutely incredible,” said the 21-year-old. As well as receiving a round of applause for two tremendous tackles during the game, Matt had even more reason to celebrate at full-time: Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave him his match shirt. A day, that Christoph Matt will never forget.

FATHER-SON DUEL:

Cup draws have a special way of producing the best stories and this year was no exception when SC Freiburg were pulled out of the hat to face Germania Halberstadt. The backstory? A family duel, as Andreas Petersen – coach of Halberstadt – faced son Nils, striker at SC Freiburg. It was the latter who claimed bragging rights on this occasion, opening the scoring for the Bundesliga side before going on to claim the “Man of the Match” award in the 2-1 victory.

LEHER MINIBUS:

As Bundesliga team buses become ever more comfortable, sides in lower divisions are often forced to get more creative. Leher TS decided the best way of getting to the Nordseedtadion in Bremerhaven was by public transport. TuS Erndtebrück also kept it local, using three nine-seater minibuses to get to their home game in the Leimbachstadion in Siegen.

DODGY LINES:

Certain scenes in the Kreisliga are an everyday occurrence. They do the rounds on social media, act as a symbol for the romance of amateur football and put a big grin on the face of those who see it. It’s rare that wobbly lines would appear for a DFB-Pokal match, but that’s exactly what happened in the Lohmühle stadium in Lübeck as SV Eicheded took on FC Kaiserslautern over the weekend.

SUBSTITUTE BALLBOYS:

Ball kids belong to every game of football at all levels. The only problem can be if your main ball fetchers get stuck in traffic en route to the game. FC Rieslasingen-Arlen had an easy way of solving the problem though, simply using those first team players who had not made the matchday squad to collect errant footballs. Vanity? Not a chance.

AN ‘UNPLEASANT’ TEAM TALK:

The opening round of the DFB-Pokal always gives us some lasting images to take away from the weekend. For example, the emotional team talk given by amateur team coaches in the dressing room to motivate their players before kick-off. SV Morlautern Mäuschen coach Karl-Heinz Halter said his side needed to be “utterly unpleasant” ahead of their tie with Greuther Fürth - a team talk made all the more ironic given Morlautern went on to lose the game 0-5.
