Reus:“Not great, but extremely valuable”

Germany international Marco Reus was involved in several opportunities early on against Hannover 96. First off the Dortmund forward was unable to find the net from close range against his Germany team mate Rob-Robert Zieler and shortly afterwards his direct free-kick struck the woodwork. Borussia Dortmund struggled to create clear chances after that, but in the end Henrich Mkhitaryan broke the deadlock and provided the winning goal. DFB.de collected the Marco Reus’ reaction following Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Hannover.

Question: Mr. Reus, you had two good chances early on in the game but you weren’t able to convert. Dortmund struggled afterwards, why?

Marco Reus: Because after those chances were didn’t play the quality of football that we displayed in the opening ten to 15 minutes. All round it wasn’t a good performance by us. We weren’t able to play the type of football that we wanted to and that’s why it was a bit of a scrappy win.

Question: What exactly didn’t go according to plan?

Reus: We lacked pace and our passes weren’t crisp enough. We didn’t occupy the spaces that we intended too. That makes it difficult to create chances and get attempts on target.

Question: From the stands we witnessed a lot of players having difficulties with the pitch. What is your take on what happened?

Reus: Hannover had the same problems as us, so we shouldn’t even consider that as a factor. Obviously the conditions get difficult when cold temperatures and rain combine. But that has nothing to do with the fact that we didn’t deliver the type of performance against Hannover that we’ve displayed in recent weeks.

Question: Dortmund still managed to extend their lead over third place to 13 points following Hertha BSC’s defeat.

Reus: One thing is clear – in the past it wouldn’t have been certain that we would win a game like today’s. Therefore we should take it as it is. It wasn’t a great performance in terms of the football we played, but it was an extremely valuable win. The fact that we are not only able to maintain our second place with a performance like today, but to actually extend our advantage speaks for itself. The performance didn’t really hurt us.

Question: What was your reaction to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal?

Reus: He did very well. Marcel Schmelzer made a flanking run and Micki pulls inside. We all know how good his finish is and we definitely needed that goal. We would’ve liked to score a goal like that in the first half but it is what it is. to win. We didn’t play well, but still managed

Question: Dortmund face FC Porto in the Europa League on Thursday. The match-up certainly has the potential of a Champions League encounter. What do you expect?

Reus: There are still a few days to go before the match. I think we would do well to analyse our game against Hannover first and discuss the mistakes we made. Porto will definitely be a completely different game. For one, they have a different type of quality and secondly I believe that we will approach the game differently from a mental aspect.

Question: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s outfit today has led to a frenzy on the social media sites. How did you like your striking partner’s white feather cape?

Reus: We all know what Auba’s clothing style is like, so I can’t say I’m surprised about anything he wears anymore.
