Reus leads Dortmund to comfortable win as Korb shines in Gladbach victory

Led by a brilliant Marco Reus and serial goalscorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Borussia Dortmund recorded a comfortable 5-1 home victory over FC Augsburg on Bundesliga matchday 10. The victory sees Dortmund maintain their grip on second place, whilst Augsburg are now at the foot of the table having failed to earn a win in any of their last five games.

Aubameyang opened the scoring after 18 minutes with his eleventh goal of the season, before Germany international Reus bagged a double to give Dortmund a 3-0 lead at half time. The visitors pulled one back shortly after the break through Raul Bobadilla, before Aubameyang bagged two late goals to give Dortmund a 5-1 victory.

Dortmund overrun helpless visitors

80,359 spectators witnessed Dortmund get off to a hot start as Augsburg's Ragnar Klawan made a crucial last-ditch tackle to prevent Aubameyang from scoring just 40 seconds after kick-off. The hosts continued to apply pressure and created chances with nearly every attack, whilst Augsburg were forced to sit deep and thus unable to produce any real attacks of their own.

A fine combination between Germany international Ilkay Gündogan and Aubameyang led to the first goal. Just three minutes later, Shinji Kagawa supplied Reus with a fine assist as the Germany international doubled the hosts' lead.

Aubameyang on fire

Dortmund didn't appear tired despite their long Europa League journey on Thursday to Azerbaijan, where they recorded a 3-1 victory against FK Gabala. The third goal resembled the second as Kagawa set up Reus again, this time with a fine back-heel pass.

The game was effectively over for Augsburg at half time, but they came out of the break with an improved attitude and pulled one back through Bobadilla's header. The visitors were looking to launch a comeback but Dortmund were clinical on the counter as Augsburg presented them with more space in the second period. In the end it was Aubameyang who scored his second hat-trick in just four days to round off the scoring.

Korb shines for Gladbach in victory over Schalke

Borussia Mönchengladbach have continued their upward trend in the Bundesliga, recording a 3-1 victory against FC Schalke 04 on matchday 10. The victory lifts the Fohlenelf into seventh place, as they now trail third-placed Schalke by just four points. Germany U21 international Julian Korb played a key part in Gladbach's win, scoring one goal, clearing a ball off the line and winning a penalty. Lars Stindl and Raffael were also on target for the hosts, while Schalke scored through an own goal from Andreas Christensen shortly before the break. Schalke also had Johannes Geis sent off after receiving a straight red card following a very harsh tackle with just ten minutes left on the clock.

54,010 spectators in the sold-out Borussia-Park saw the Foals get off to a good start. They controlled possession, won a majority of challenges and in Korb had the most active player on the pitch. He left his first mark just nine minutes into the match, forcing Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann to a good save with his powerful shot from outside the area. Twenty minutes later Korb charged into the area from the right hand side with the ball at his feet and was brought down by Dennis Aogo. Stindl's penalty attempt was saved by Fährmann but the former Hannover midfielder scored from the rebound to give Gladbach the lead on the half-hour mark.

Schalke now had more to their game and deservingly scored the equaliser in the closing stages of the first half. Leroy Sané's attempted shot from distance was skilfully controlled by team mate Max Meyer, who played a low cross into the box which was deflected by Christensen into his own net.

Korb clears ball off line and scores at the other end

The visitors continued to push forward in the second half and nearly took the lead when Pierre-Emile Höjberg's shot was cleared off the line by the very active Korb. At the other end, Sascha Riether made a similar clearance from Stindl's header to prevent Gladbach retaking the lead. Borussia were eventually rewarded for their hard work as Raffael scored a direct free-kick from just outside the area.

Schalke's Geis brought down Hahn in the closing stages of the match with a very harsh tackle and was rightfully sent off. Hahn required treatment and was unable to continue. Gladbach now looked to put the game to bed against ten men and Korb was able to crown his outstanding performance, rounding off the scoring with a strike from ten yards to make it 3-1.
