Reus goal not enough as Dortmund lose in Monaco

Borussia Dortmund have been knocked out of the Champions League by Monaco at the quarterfinal stage. After losing the first-leg 3-2 in Dortmund, BVB lost 3-1 tonight in Monaco. Early goals Kylian Mbappe (3’) and Radamel Falcao (17’) all but killed off any chance of the German side progressing. Marco Reus did pull a goal back for Dortmund early in the second half, but Monaco continued to create chances and landed the knock-out punch when substitute Valere Germain struck in the 82nd minute.

Reus and two World Cup winners in the starting XI

Dortmund named Germany internationals Marco Reus and Julian Weigl in the starting XI along with Matthias Ginter and Erik Durm. Captain Marcel Schmelzer was on the bench along with Sven Bender, Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic.

Just 180 seconds were on the clock when Monaco took the lead. Dortmund keeper Roman Bürki parried a shot from Benjamin Mendy rather tamely into the air and 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe had a lot of time to tuck the rebound into the bottom corner. In doing so, he became the youngest player to score five goals in the Champions League.

Sahin hits the post

Dortmund now required three goals to go through and they had some chances in the first half. Reus‘ shot went straight at Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic in the ninth minute and five minutes later, Nuri Sahin struck an almost inch perfect free-kick which agonisingly hit the inside of the post and flew across the face of the goal and out.

At the other end, Monaco remained dangerous. Radamel Falcao doubled the home side’s lead on 17 minutes when he headed in Lemar’s cross after getting himself in front of Ginter.

Monaco have the better chances

Monaco continued to enjoy themselves in attack as Mbappe and Toure both had chances well denied by the Dortmund defence. Durm almost diverted the ball into his own net from a corner on 24 minutes.

Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel made an early change when he brought on Dembele for Durm. The Germans grew into the game but lacked the killer pass as some promising combinations between Kagawa and Aubameyang (36’) and Reus and Dembele (38’) sadly came to nothing.

Reus gives Dortmund hope

Dortmund began the second half in perfect fashion. Marco Reus rifled Dembele’s cut-back into the corner on 48 minutes and suddenly the Germans only needed to find two more goals to take the game into extra time. However, much like in the first half, Dortmund played well up to the Monaco penalty area, but lacked the necessary cutting-edge.

As the away side began to take more risks, gaps began to open up at the other end and Falcao spurned a great opportunity in the 65th minute as he chipped the ball over Bürki, but also over the bar. Dortmund fought until the end, but a Monaco counter-attack put the game to bed in the 82nd minute as Valere Germain finished off a flowing move to make it 3-1 on the night and 6-3 on aggregate.

Khedira helps Juve get past Barca

Barcelona failed to repeat their miracle from the last round and crashed out of the Champions League to Juventus at the Nou Camp. The Italians, helped by a strong all-round performance from Germany World Cup winner Sami Khedira, secured a 0-0 draw in Spain which was enough to see them through having won the first-leg 3-0 last week in Turin. Germany international Marc-André ter Stegen was in goal for Barca.

Khedira and Juve limited Barcelona’s dangerous strike force of Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar to few clear cut opportunities. Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon, who will turn 40 next January, can still dream of winning his first ever Champions League title as he put in another classy performance in front of 96,290 fans in Spain. Barcelona’s star man Lionel Messi is still yet to score a goal past Buffon.
