Reus and Ginter fire Dortmund to top of the table

Borussia Dortmund and their new manager Thomas Tuchel have claimed the top spot in the Bundesliga standings after a 4-0 victory in Ingolstadt on matchday 2. BVB controlled the game and should have taken the lead earlier, but it wasn’t until the second half when World Cup winner Matthias Ginter broke the deadlock. Goals from Marco Reus, Shinji Kagawa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang followed. Dortmund and Tuchel have now won all six of their competitive games this season.

Dortmund squander chances

The result is not an accurate reflection on the run of play, as Borussia created a huge number of clear cut chances right from the start of the match but failed to make their dominance count. Ingolstadt were outclassed and tried to close the gap with a strong running effort and aggression in their challenges.

Reus, Aubameyang, Gündogan and Mkhitaryan all had several chances in the opening 45 minutes to put BVB ahead in front of the 15,000 spectators in Ingolstadt’s Sportpark.

Ginter scores the opener, Reus converts from the spot

The second half started with Ingolstadt creating their first real chances, but Moritz Hartmann was unable to overcome BVB keeper Roman Bürki. Just as Ingolstadt were beginning to see more of the game, Ginter scored his first goal for Dortmund, which opened up the floodgates. Reus next converted from the spot after Hartmann brought down Schmelzer in the area.

Kagawa and Aubameyang scored late to round off a well deserved victory for the visiting side. Dortmund now sit at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of FC Bayern thanks to their goal difference. Ingolstadt are currently in ninth place after suffering their first Bundesliga defeat.
