Real Madrid go into Champions League clash on the back of a win

World Champion Toni Kroos and Real Madrid won their last game before the Champions League round of 16 fixture away to Schalke next week. The Spanish table toppers celebrated a 2-0 victory against Deportivo La Coruna and now sit four points ahead of archrivals Barcelona who played a game less.

Madrid can be confident when visiting Schalke on Wednesday (20:45 CET). Isco scored before the break and Karim Benzema added a second-half goal. Barca have the opportunity to close the gap to the top when they play UD Levante on Sunday (17:00 CET).

Mustafi and Valencia are fourth

World Champion Shkodran Mustafi and Valencia are reaching for the Champions League spots. On Sunday, the Blanquinegros clinched an unspectacular 1-0 victory over Getafe. It’s their fourth win in five games and means that they remain in a fourth place that would qualify them for the Champions League play-offs.

Alvaro Negredo scored the decisive penalty after he had been fouled in the area. Mustafi played over the full 90 minutes.

Fiorentina win without Gomez

Germany international Mario Gomez was benched for Fiorentina’s 3-1 victory away to Sassulo Calcio. If they maintain their fourth place, they will qualify for the Champions League play-offs. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring half an hour into the game and Khouma Babacar added to the tally either side of the break.

Can and Liverpool in the quarter finals, Wollscheid and Stoke lose

Liverpool reached the FA Cup quarter finals with a hard-earned victory. Under-21 international Emre Can started for the Reds, who narrowly beat Crystal Palace away from home. Frazier Campbell put the hosts ahead after 15 minutes, but second-half goals by Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana sealed the Liverpool win.

Germany international Philipp Wollscheid and Stoke City suffered a 4-1 defeat away to second-division Blackburn Rovers. Wollscheid provided the assist for Peter Crouch’s early goal for the Potters. However, a Joshua King hat-trick and a Rudy Gestede penalty turned the game to the hosts’ favour. Stoke were down to ten men for the second half because Geoff Cameron saw red before the injury-time penalty.
