Real, Juventus and Leicester qualify for last 16

World Champion Ron-Robert Zieler celebrated his successful debut in the Champions League yesterday evening. The former Hannover player beat Club Brugge 2-1 with Leicester City and now the Foxes have secured qualification for the last sixteen of the competition. Real Madrid, Juventus, AS Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen have also already qualified for the last sixteen.

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t score on his return to his former club Sporting Lisbon, however he did provide the assist for Raphael Varane’s opening goal in the 29th minute. It looked as though Real Madrid were going to carelessly give away the victory when Adrien Silva scored the equaliser for Sporting after a penalty was awarded for a handball. However Karim Benzema scored the winner to secure victory for Real. Sporting player Joao Pereira was sent off in the 64th minute after a violent challenge. Despite winning yesterday evening, Real Madrid are still behind Borussia Dortmund in second place in Group F.

Leicester win, Juventus turn things around

Leicester City, currently in 14th place in the English Premier League, got off to a dream start against Club Brugge. Former Mainz player Shinji Okazaki opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty in the 30th minute to make it 2-0. José Izquierdo got one back for Club Brugge in the 51st minute. Leicester City secured their place at the top of the group with the win yesterday evening, as FC Porto drew 0-0 with FC Copenhagen and can no longer overtake them on points.

Sami Khedira and Juventus also had a reason to celebrate on Tuesday evening. Juventus beat Sevilla FC 3-1 to secure their place in the last sixteen of the Champions League. Sevilla went in front in the 9th minute through Nicolas Pareja, before Claudio Marchisio (45+2’), Leonardo Bonucci (84’) and Mario Mandzukic (90+4’) all netted for Juventus.

AS Monaco beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in Group E, meaning that Bayer Leverkusen are safe at the top of the group.
