Real defeat Bayern after extra-time

FC Bayern München were knocked out of the Champions League after being overrun in extra-time in a gripping quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid go through to the semi-finals after winning 4-2, scoring three in extra-time. Robert Lewandowski had put FCB into the lead with a 53rd minute penalty. Cristiano Ronaldo struck for Real in the 76th minute but a bizarre own goal from Sergio Ramos after pressure from Thomas Müller just two minutes later gave Bayern that crucial second away goal. That is how it would stay as 90 minutes could not force a winner in the tie with Zidane’s side having won the first leg 2-1 in Munich.

Yet Bayern were already up against it as extra-time got underway following Arturo Vidal’s second yellow of the night to cap a tie to forget for the Chilean. However four-time Ballon D’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo undid the away side once again with his half-volley in the 105th minute after a Toni Kroos cross. The European champion completed his hat-trick just four minutes later to put the match beyond all doubt. Marco Asensio rubbed salt into the wounds with eight minutes remaining, meaning the hosts march on and continue to be in position to become the first side to defend a Champions League title.

City rivals Athletico Madrid also progressed through to the last four after they drew 1-1 away at Premier League champions Leicester City to end the minnows’ European fairytale. Saul Niguez gave Simeone’s men the lead before Jamie Vardy levelled the scoring with half an hour remaining.

Hummels, Boateng and Lewandowski all play

Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng as well as Robert Lewandowski, all of whom had been nursing injuries, made their returns to the starting line-up. And it was Bayern who had the first threatening opportunity but Real began to stamp their authority after 15 minutes and the two centre-backs had to be at their best to keep the Madrid forward line at bay.

It was not long before Neuer was called into action. Dani Carvajal’s dangerous shot from distance was parried away by the Germany international’s fingertips before being lucky not to pick the ball out of his own net after a superb goal-line clearance from Boateng. As both teams headed into the dressing room with the scores level, the tie remained wide open with 45 minutes of normal time still to play.

Bayern turn up the heat, Lewandowski holds his nerve

Bayern came out strongly in the second half as they sought to break the deadlock. The ball fell to Robben beautifully after a neat lay-off from David Alaba but the Dutchman’s chip was cleared away by Marcelo. However Bayern’s pressure finally paid off when Casemiro brought down Robben in the box and a composed Lewandowski stepped up to coolly place his penalty down the middle.

Real now looked extremely vulnerable and Robben found Vidal beautifully moments later but the midfielder’s shot on the turn went over much to the relief of Madrid. Ancelotti’s side continued to look dangerous as the Real defence found themselves on the back foot.

Müller forces Ramos into own-goal

Keylor Navas had to be on hand to keep out Ribery and Lewandowski then found himself alone in front of the Real keeper after a through-ball from Boateng but the linesman adjudged him to be in an offside position.

Bayern began to take more risks as they sought that crucial second away goal and were punished for it as Casemiro crossed for Ronaldo who headed in to the far corner. But it took just 102 seconds for the away team to respond. World Champion Thomas Müller made a nuisance of himself in the Madrid box and forced Ramos into a mix-up that saw him put into his own net.

Bayern down a man, Ronaldo wins it

The match took another turn, and not in Bayern’s favour. Vidal picked up his second yellow of the evening to cap a tie to forget for the midfielder. Carlo Ancelotti responded by bringing off Lewandowski for Joshua Kimmich to close the gap in the middle of the park.

Despite holding out until extra-time, the Munich men looked far more open and Ronaldo took full advantage, finding the target from an offside position to level the scoring and put Real in prime position. Ronaldo then completed his hat-trick before Asensio completed the rout as Bayern will feel decision went against them.
