"Ready for the European Championship"

The Germany U21s were training in 30 degrees for the past week in Bergen, Austria. Horst Hrubesch’s men head to Prague on Saturday (13th June) for the European Championship.

A total of 13 training sessions took place during the eight days in Austria. The squad and staff were delighted with the conditions and facilities in Leogang and at their hotel. After the training camp, DFB.de spoke to some of those involved.

“First and foremost, we’re delighted that no one was injured during the camp,” said Hrubesch. “We were working in the perfect conditions and I’m happy with my team. They worked hard and concentrated throughout. We’re ready for the tournament.”

Nico Schulz echoed his manager’s sentiments. "It was important to get together again after a long season,” explained the Hertha BSC defender. “We gave it our all, interacted well, spoke with each other and had a lot of fun. All of this is important if you want a successful side.”

Yunus Malli feels that the side are ready for the Championship. “It was a great few days. We had a number of challenging sessions and also worked on tactical intricacies,” remarked the 1. FSV Mainz 05 midfielder. “It was important to work on our identity again. A team of our quality needs to take control of the games and get in front early on.”

The majority of the players cited the Champions League final barbecue evening as the highlight of the trip. Group “Brain Activity” events and visits by Olympic champions Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann added to the varied nature of the camp.

Germany face Serbia (17th June, 20:45 CEST), Denmark (20th June, 20:45 CEST) and the Czech Republic (23rd June, 20:45 CEST) during the group stage.
