RB Leipzig go top of the Bundesliga

Newly promoted RB Leipzig went top of the Bundesliga on Friday evening after their 3-2 win away at Bayer Leverkusen. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team went behind twice before the break after goals from Kevin Kampl (2’) and Julian Brandt (45+2’) but got themselves back into the game twice through an own goal from Julian Baumgartlinger (4’) and a superb strike from Emil Forsberg (67’). In the second half, Peter Gulácsi saved a penalty from Leverkusen’s Hakan Calhanoglu to keep RB Leipzig in the game.

Willi Orban’s winning goal in the 81st minute led to a historic victory for RB Leipzig. They are now the first newly promoted side to have 27 points after just 11 games. That’s more that Kaiserslautern in the 1997/98 season. FC Bayern München now have to beat Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (18:30 CET) to go back to the top of the table. Leverkusen are now in 8th place with 16 points.

Goal and assist for Brandt

Leverkusen got off to a dream start in front of their 27,752 fans in the BayArena. Brandt provided the assist for Kampl who put the hosts in the lead after just 70 seconds. However, this lead didn’t last long. Baumgartlinger put the ball in his own net after a RB Leipzig corner to bring the two teams level.

It was an intense first half with both teams looking to go in front. Charles Aranguiz missed a good opportunity to put the hosts back in the lead in the 16th minute. Brandt scored a fantastic goal from a tight angle just before half-time to make it 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen.

Calhanoglu misses a penalty, Leipzig turn things around

Bayer Leverkusen had the best chance to take the lead right at the start of the second half. Stefan Ilsanker brought down Julian Brandt in his own box to give away a penalty. However, Gulácsi got down well to parry Calhanoglu’s shot wide. Leipzig responded quickly and Emil Forsberg brought them back level after a fantastic solo run and strike.

Both teams were determined to win more than a point. However, it was Leipzig that got the winner after Willi Orban headed Forsberg’s cross straight into the back of the net.
