Quarter final curios: Ballboys, tractors and duplicate goals

The DFB Cup quarter final stage has been completed – well, almost, seeing as the weather prevented the match between Sportfreunde Lotte and Borussia Dortmund from taking place – but there was plenty of things to find interesting from the three games that did happen. DFB.de reflects on the curious and interesting trinkets that occurred in the quarter finals of the competition so far.

Making amends: After Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 2-1 victory over Hamburger SV, BMG captain Lars Stindl realised that before the game, he did not notice that a young ballboy named Jonas was asking him for a handshake. Stindl apologised after the game on Twitter and promised that he would give the young man his jersey.

Red card reunion: Holger Badstuber is currently on loan at FC Schalke 04 from FC Bayern München, and on Wednesday evening came up against his parent club for the second time since joining the Royal Blues in January. It was not the happiest reunion for the Germany international, as his side fell to a 3-0 loss and Badstuber himself received two yellow cards within three minutes in the final quarter of the game for fouls on Arjen Robben and Javi Martinez. Despite his featuring for their rival on the night, the Bayern fans still chanted Badstuber’s name as he came off.

Déjà vu for Lewandowski and Schalke: Robert Lewandowski has done it again. No, not just scoring goals, although he has been rather proficient at that, notching his tenth in nine games in 2017, taking him up to 28 so far this season. Rather, in opening the scoring against Schalke (again), he replicated almost precisely his opener against the Royal Blues from the two teams’ 4th February Bundesliga clash. Finding space off towards the left side of the area, latching onto a slick through ball, he delicately chipped the ball over Ralf Fährmann to give his side the lead on both occasions, making the two goals almost carbon copies of one another.

Hair-raising comeback: Eintracht Frankfurt’s Marco Russ celebrated an emotional return to the field during his side’s win over 2. Bundesliga team Arminia Bielefeld. On being back on the pitch, he said “I can barely describe the feeling.” Russ has been absent for the best part of a year after undergoing chemotherapy. After the final whistle, he enjoyed the moment with his daughter Vida and his wife Janina, who stood with tears in her eyes on the sideline. “It was over nine months, and it was a very difficult time. I just really enjoyed being out there today,” said Russ.

Bad omens: Borussia Dortmund’s away match and 3. Liga team Lotte was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. BVB’s club coach was in fact left stuck in a field close to the stadium and needed the help of tractors to be released. However, soon enough it was en route back to Dortmund on account of the game’s cancellation.
