Provisional EUROs squad: Goessling returns; Schüller earns call-up

Steffi Jones has named her 29-player provisional squad for the Women’s EURO 2017, which will be played in the Netherlands from 16th July to 6th August. VfL Wolfsburg’s Lena Goeßling has returned to the squad, while FC Bayern’s Simone Laudehr and Melanie Leupolz are not included after their long injury absences.

Jones stated that “Lena is fully fit again; she has been training very well at club level and her experience and versatility makes her an important player for us. Simone, on the other hand, is still in the rebuilding phases of her training, and the tournament has come a little too soon after her syndesmosis injury. Melanie has featured in the Bundesliga again but there are still issues with her knee and she is not at full fitness. Along with the player herself and medical consultation, we have decided that it does not make sense at the current time.

Five goalkeepers named in squad

Lea Schüller has been called up to the senior squad for the first time. Jones described the SGS Essen player as “an interesting prospect who has excelled at youth level and in the league,” adding “it will be good for her to get the experience at this level.”

The five goalkeepers in the provisional squad are Almuth Schult (VfL Wolfsburg), Laura Benkarth (SC Freiburg), Lisa Weiß (SGE Essen), Lisa Schmitz (1. FFC Turbine Potsdam) and Carina Schlüter (SC Sand). On the latter pair, Jones said “both have earned their nominations with their strong performances throughout the season.”

Final squad to be announced on 5th July

The most experienced players in the provisional squad are Olympic champions Anja Mittag and Babett Peter, who have 153 and 106 international caps, respectively. The preparations will begin on 18th June before travelling to the Netherlands on 12th July. The only game the team is set to play before the tournament will be on 4th July at 17:45 CEST against Brazil in Sandhausen.

"We have only 15 days of tournament preparation, but we want to use it intensively, to solidify our plans and develop more as a team,” said Jones. The final squad of 23, which will feature three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players will be announced on July 5th.
