Prießen: "Huge relief" upon scoring winning goal

It was a thriller, right up until the last minute, with 1. FFC Frankfurt coming away with the result. It was an important 2-1 victory for the current 3rd placed team in the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga against the newly promoted SC Sand. After falling behind early on, Kerstin Garefrekes und Marith Prießen scored to completely change the game. In an interview with DFB.de, 24-year-old winning goal scorer Prießen talks about how important the win is for the rest of the season. The 2010 U20 World Champion also reveals how FFC aren’t going to let their opportunity to win the title slip.

DFB.de: Ms Prießen, did you reckon on it being such a difficult game in Sand?

Marith Prießen: We knew that it wasn’t going to be a sure-fire success to win there. The fans create a great atmosphere – they jeer and whistle at opponents and cheer for their own team. That is already a special atmosphere in Sand. I hadn’t however counted on the fact that it would be such a difficult game. Sand made it very tricky for us. From time to time I thought: “Oh my goodness, it simply can’t be like this.”

DFB.de: Was that when you had fallen 1-0 behind?

Prießen: Yes. I was really concerned that we were going to get nothing out of the game. We then luckily managed to stage a two-goal comeback and took three extremely important points.

DFB.de: Honestly now, were the opponents really so strong or were you simply not as good as last week in the 5-1 win over Potsdam?

Prießen: Both. I’m not going to deny that it wasn’t our best performance. It is even more significant that we still came away with all three points against a strong opponent. It was our own fault that it turned out to be such a thriller.

DFB.de: Kerstin Garefrekes scored first and then you hit the back of the net eight minutes before the end…

Prießen: I wasn’t certain that I had got the ball across the line. I had to look around and check but when all the others ran over to me, it was a huge relief.

DFB.de: Was it even nicer because it was the winning goal?

Prießen: Yes, it obviously makes the result have more meaning for me personally. However, it doesn’t really matter who scores the goal just that we win.

DFB.de: Were you certain after your goal that you were going to win the match?

Prießen: No, there were still ten minutes left to play and Sand didn’t give up. We had to keep fighting and hold out until the end. It was not easy.

DFB.de: Was this goal the next step in your quest to establish a regular starting position?

Prießen: I’ve been in the starting line-up regularly over the past few weeks. Scoring the goal was good for me as it proved that I’m heading in the right direction. However, I'm not going to rest on my laurels. I am going to continue to give everything in each training session. I would like to make it as tricky as possible for the coaching staff to leave me out of the starting XI.

DFB.de: What did you think when you scored the winning goal?

Prießen: I was happy. We needed the result in order to stay in reach of Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg….

DFB.de: ... who drew on Sunday.

Prießen: That certainly wasn’t the worst result for us. However, we’re no longer concerned about how other teams are doing. We have decided to focus only on the things we can influence.

DFB.de: You’re only five points behind current table toppers Wolfsburg. Are you still in the title race?

Prießen: We’re not thinking about that. We’re just going to do our best until the end of the season and then we’ll see what happens.

DFB.de: What are your hopes for the end-of-season run-in?

Prießen: We don’t want to allow any further slips to happen and we want to win the next seven matches.

DFB.de: Wolfsburg still have to come to Frankfurt…

Prießen:... and on the last match day. Maybe we’ll then be in a situation where the result of the game will decide the title. That would obviously be fantastic for us. However, I want to make it very clear again: it’s not in our own hands. We can’t do anything more than going about our business and trying to get results. Our next aim is to win the game against Jena this coming weekend. It will be another difficult task against a traditionally tricky opponent.
