Presidential board outline €109 million budget for DFB construction project

The presidential board of the German FA (DFB) have approved the architectural contract for the construction of the DFB’s new headquarters in Frankfurt am Main and have set out a budget of €109 million for the future offices, academy and distribution centre. The adjustment from the originally planned financial cost of €89 million has come about due to the planned construction of an indoor football centre. On top of that comes the additional office space for the DFB headquarters, with an extra 60 jobs taken into account.

The optional construction of an indoor football centre was in the original plans published by architectural office kadawittfeld on 1st June. The committee have called for an immediate start on the project, due to the fact that a delay would result in extra costs and prolonged limited usage of the area. A significant factor in the board’s decision was the recommendation of the sporting administration, who place great value on the indoor football centre. This indoor football centre would represent an alternative training option all year around. Due to the fact that the indoor centre was taken into account in the original drafts, the area for expansion is still vacant, and 75% of the complex will be green.

Bierhoff: "Optimal conditions for the athletes under one roof"

"The entire project is based on attempting to create optimal conditions for the athletes under one roof, and aiding in footballing development," explained Oliver Bierhoff, who took over the project leadership from DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock on the 1st July. "The investment in an indoor football centre will certainly pay dividends, as it gives our coaches, players and referees more options. After getting the green light from the presidential board, we can go ahead with our plans and continue the development of this unique project."

"Due to the immediate development of the indoor football centre, we can build much more economically than if we were to wait until a later stage of construction," said DFB treasurer Reinhard Grindel. "We can cover the increased cost from our own financial sources. It is an investment in the future of German football, as it will not only benefit the highest level, but also the entire amateur football system in Germany."

The DFB has introduced a committee to oversee the planning, construction and financial elements of the entire project. Members of this committee include DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach (management), DFB treasurer Reinhard Grindel, DFB vice president Peter Frymuth, DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock and Christian Seifert, chairman of the DFL. Project leader Oliver Bierhoff and sub-project manager Hansi Flick will report to this committee.
