Presidential Board convokes extraordinary General Assembly

At a regular DFB Presidential Board meeting held in Frankfurt earlier today, Dr Theo Zwanziger confirmed his intention to leave the Presidency with effect from 2 March 2012; also on that day, an Extraordinary General Assembly has been convened to take place in Frankfurt, where a total of 261 delegates from the DFB's regional and sub-regional FAs will vote on Zwanziger's successor. The designated candidate is Wolfgang Niersbach who is set to become the eleventh President in German FA history.

Sandrock proposed as new General Secretary

Zwanziger's decision to step down before the end of his tenure has caused a knock-on effect in that Niersbach will be required to vacate the position of General Secretary, for which 55-year-old Helmut Sandrock has been officially suggested, currently the DFB's Director of Match Operations, Coach Education, Talent Promotion, as well as Youth and Grassroots Football. Under the DFB Statutes, it is the prerogative of the Presidential Board to nominate the General Secretary, with the GA delegates expected to confirm the appointment.

Between 2000 and 2002, Sandrock was chairman of the board at German club MSV Duisburg, one of the founding members of the board of the Deutsche Fußball-Liga (DFL), and a member of the German League Association board. In 2003, he assumed the position of Tournament Director with the German LOC for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, after which he joined Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg as their CEO, celebrating the Austrian championship in 2007. Moers-born Sandrock, a keen footballer who even earned a few German youth caps, returned to the DFB as Director in 2008.
