Post-Olmypic plan: Jones to appoint Högner and Hagedorn as assistant coaches

Markus Högner and Verena Hagedorn are set to become assistant coaches of Steffi Jones' future Germany national side. Jonas will take over from Silvia Neid following the Olympic Games, who will become the head of the DFB’s new women’s football scouting department. Högner and Hagedorn have both been given two-year contracts by the German Football Association.

48-year-old Markus Högner has been manager of Women’s Bundesliga side SGS Essen, and was active as a player at Alemannia Aachen and Union Solingen earlier in his career. He began coaching in 2004 at U16 level in Alemannia Aachen, before taking over their U19 side. In 2008, he took over responsibility for Schalke 04’s U23 outfit.

Verena Hagedorn has played 13 matches for Germany women, and played for SC 07 Bad Neuenahr and FCR 01 Duisburg in the Bundesliga during her career. Since 2006, she has been a coach at the elite football school in Bad Neuenahr, before being appointed onto the training staff at the Mittelrhein Football Association.

Jones: "Högner und Jones bring plenty of experience"

Steffi Jones said: "Markus Högner and Verena Hagedorn bring plenty of experience in terms of caching, and I have complete trust in both of them. I acquired my coaching license with Markus in 2007, and played together with Verena in the national side. I will reveal all of my other plans as head coach after the Olympic Games."

Markus Högner added: "I’m looking forward to this exciting challenge, as it will give me the opportunity to develop as a person and as a coach. I think the time is right for me to make the next step after six years at Essen." Verena is also relishing the new challenge: "It’s proof of the trust that is there, and I can’t wait to get started and work with Steffi. It’s an honour for me to be part of this team."
