Portugal beat Poland on penalties to reach the semis

Portugal’s hopes of a first title are still alive after Cristiano Ronaldo & Co. prevailed on penalties against Poland. Robert Lewandowski’s goal after 100 seconds, the second fastest in European Championship history, put Poland ahead, but ultimately a miss from fellow Bundesliga star Jakub Blaszczykowski in the shootout saw Portugal progress with a 5-3 win. They will now play Wales or Belgium in the semi-finals, who face off in Lille on Friday night.

The score was 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Lewandowski’s lead cancelled out around the half-hour mark by his future FC Bayern teammate Renato Sanches. “It was the perfect time for my first international goal,” said the 18-year-old after the game. The result was hard to swallow for Poland though. “It hurts a lot,” said Lewandowski. “We were the better team, so it’s very sad to have lost on penalties. They had more possession, but we had more chances. It’s painful and it will be for a while.”
