Popp receives Footballer of the Year Award

Rio 2016 Gold medallist and VfL Wolfsburg player Alexandra Popp received Germany’s “Footballer of the Year” award of Saturday’s game between VfL’s men’s team and 1. FC Köln. The 25-year old attacker was presented with the trophy by kicker editor Jörg Jakob. The magazine conducted the ballot alongside numerous sport journalists.

Popp received 109 votes, finishing ahead of international teammates Mandy Islacker (1. FFC Frankfurt, 63 votes) and Melanie Behringer (Bayern München, 42 votes). This year’s men’s award was won by World Cup winner Jérôme Boateng.
