Podolski scores as Galatasaray win first leg of Turkish cup semi-final

A late goal from Lukas Podolski has given defending champions Galatasaray a good chance of reaching the Turkish cup final. The record cup winners won the first leg of their semi-final against Caykur Rizespor 3-1 to give them a strong position going into the second leg on 4th May. Podolski put the finishing touches on a good performance with a great solo-effort in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the match.

The Germany international wasted a good chance early on to put his team ahead but it didn’t matter as three minutes later Galatasaray took the lead through Emre Colak. The visitors continued to dominate the game after taking the lead. It got worse for the hosts as former Bundesliga player Cédric Makiadi was sent off after picking up a second yellow card in the 51st minute. Galatasaray used their numbers advantage and a good pass from Podolski led to Yasin Öztekin doubling their lead. Both teams ended up with only ten men on the pitch though as Hakan Balta was sent for an early bath in the 65th minute. Ilhan Özek pulled one back for Rizespor in the 76th minute but Podolski made sure that Galatasaray still finished the match with a two goal lead.
