Podolski and Klose to face off in the Europa League

We are reaching the business end of Europe’s club competitions, with both the Champions League and Europa League knockout rounds beginning this week. In Europe’s premier competition we have reached the last 16, while in the Europa League there are 16 first-leg games to be played.

Europa League: A number of German world cup winners and Germany internationals will be taking part with their teams. There are four Bundesliga sides in action, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke , Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg. However, Germany veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger will miss Manchester United’s match with FC Midtjylland due to a knee injury. Shkrodan Mustafi (Valencia) and Emre Can (Liverpool) will also be taking to the field on Thursday. While two of Germany’s World Cup winners will face off when Lukas Podolski’s Galatasaray take on Miroslav Klose’s Lazio.

Champions League: There are a number of well known faces playing in the Champions League as both Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg made it through their respective groups. In the next two weeks of Champions League action, seven Germany internationals could taste their first European action of 2016 with clubs from other countries. Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain) will start tonight. While Antonio Rüdiger (Roma) and World Cup winner Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) will be in direct competition with each other tomorrow to make it into the next round. World Champions Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker (both Arsenal), Sami Khedira (Juventus) and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona) will have to wait a week for their first taste of European action for 2016, as the Champions League ties are being played over two weeks.
