The 18-time Italian champions were unable to beat bottom of the table AC Cesena in Serie A and came away with a 1-1 draw. Inter will play Wolfsburg on Thursday (21:05 CET) in the second leg of their last 16 tie after losing the first leg 3-1.
Xherdan Shaqiri could miss the game against the Bundesliga side after the former Bayern München man had to be brought off in the 24th minute. World Champion Lukas Podolski, who is not registered for the Europa League, came off the bench at the break. The goal for seventh placed Inter was scored by Rodrigo Palacio (48’) after Gregoire Defrel had put the visitors in front (30’).
Real win without Kroos
Champions League holders Real Madrid cut the gap on leaders FC Barcelona thanks to their first win in the league without World Champion Toni Kroos on board. Five days after the painful defeat to Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the Champions League (4-3), Real overcame relegation threatened UD Levante 2-0 on matchday 27 to calm their fans.
Kroos watched the game from the bench as manager Carlo Ancelotti didn’t want to risk him being suspended for the upcoming El Clásico next Sunday against FC Barcelona (21:00 CET).
A win against Barcelona (65 points) would see the reigning Champions League holders (64 points) overtake their fiercest rivals in the table. Both of Real’s goals were scored by Gareth Bale (18’, 40’). World Champion Sami Khedira was not included in the Madrid squad.
