Philipp Lahm: "It's a gift"

For Philipp Lahm, winning the World Cup was the realisation of a childhood dream. As a boy, Germany’s captain kicked a ball around with friends in Munich’s Olympiapark, and last Sunday he hoisted football’s most coveted trophy aloft in Rio de Janeiro.

“It could take me a couple of days, weeks or months. It might even take a couple of years before the significance of this title really sinks in”, said Lahm in an interview with German weekly news magazine Stern.

Lahm went on to report that he suppressed a couple of tears and ran around screaming after the final whistle. On the morning after the final at the Maracana, he felt nothing but “gratitude and pure happiness. It’s a gift; I can hardly put it into words”, he said. He credited the Brazilian people with making this World Cup such a special event. “Those people loved and lived every moment of this tournament. You could really feel it. It was wonderful”, said the Bayern captain.

"Finding best solution for everyone was most important"

Despite numerous discussions about his position before and during the World Cup, the 30-year-old has always remained calm and laidback. “It hasn’t affected me at all”, he said, not least because his stints both in midfield and at right-back were both justified. “Finding the best solution for everyone was the most important thing for me”, Lahm explained. “And that can only work when I’m disciplined as an individual.”

The versatile Bayern player believes it is too soon to bracket him with German footballing legends such as Fritz Walter, Franz Beckenbauer or Lothar Matthäus. “It would make me very proud to be named alongside those other captains one day”, he said, “but that’s a long way off yet.” Right now, he would rather keep achieving as a player, and explained that this is what continues to motivate him. It is for this reason that he is looking forward to a new season with Bayern after his holidays are over. “There’s nothing better than the prospect of going to your first training session as a world champion”, Lahm concluded excitedly.
