Penalty shootout legends SV Sandhausen face trip to 1. FC Schweinfurt 05

For the first time since 2002-3, 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 are back in contention for the DFB-Pokal. 15 years ago, the Schweinfurters were eliminated in extra time by Union Berlin in the first round. This time around, they face second-division SV Sandhausen at their home ground, Willy Sachs Stadium, on August 13th at 15:30 CEST.

1. FC Schweinfurt reached this year’s DFB-Pokal by winning the Bavarian Cup. In May, the club – led by Gerd Klaus, uncle of Hannover attacker Felix Klaus – were victorious in a dramatic final against SV Wacker Burghausen. The man of the match was FC 05’s Steffen Krautschneider who scored the winning goal in front of 2,500 fans inside the Wacker Arena. After the game, the team duly celebrated by chanting “We’re going to Berlin!” with their 300 travelling fans.

Whether FC Schweinfurt go on to reach the cup final in Berlin this season, we’ll have to wait and see. First and foremost, they need a win against Sandhausen in the first round and it’s the first time the sides have ever faced one another.

Sandhausen 15-14 Stuttgart – A legendary penalty shootout

SV Sandhausen have a very long history with the DFB-Pokal. This time, it will be the Hardtwald-based club’s nineteenth time in the competition. The first time came in the 1977-78 season where they reached the third round before exiting following a 3-1 defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig. The most spectacular cup game in SV Sandhausen’s history came in 1995-96 season where the then amateur club defeated first-division VfB Stuttgart 15-14 on penalties. It’s is the longest penalty shootout in DFB-Pokal history to this day.

Following promotion into the German second division in 2012, Sandhausen have been victorious in four out of five first-round cup fixtures. Last season, SV Sandhausen managed to reach the quarter final before succumbing to Schalke 04 4-1. In the previous rounds, SVS had defeated SC Paderborn and SC Freiburg.
