Papadopoulos secures the win for HSV

Hamburger SV have moved out of the relegation zone after beating Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 on Matchday 19. Kyriakos Papadopoulos, on loan at Hamburger SV from RB Leipzig, scored the winning goal with a header in the 76th minute. Bayer Leverkusen have now lost their first two games of the second half of the season and failed to score on the road for the first time in twenty away fixtures.

45,653 spectators watched the game at the Volksparkstadion. Both teams struggled to create chances in the opening stages and most of the action was occurring in midfield. Both teams were defending well and there were no clear-cut chances for either side before half-time.

Papadopoulos keeps his cool

Hamburger SV almost found the breakthrough just minutes into the second half, however Bobby Wood shot just wide after cutting in from the left hand side. Hamburger SV begun to take more control over the game. Just minutes later, Nicolai Müller managed to find a way through the Bayer defence but Ömer Toprak made a well-timed sliding tackle to clear the danger.

Hamburger SV were the better side in the second half but didn’t manage to pose a real threat on goal despite many attacking pieces of play. However, HSV eventually took the lead through a set-piece. Lewis Holtby whipped a free-kick into the box and Papadopoulos was there to head the ball into the net. Bayer almost found the equaliser just minutes before the final whistle but Stefan Kießling’s shot hit the bar.
