Paderborn vs FC Ingolstadt: Final third division side dream of quarter finals

After two rounds and 48 matches, SC Paderborn are the final third tier side remaining in the DFB-Pokal. With a place in the quarter finals on the line, the side face second division FC Ingolstadt. The chances of the third tier side, who top their domestic table currently, springing another surprise certainly isn’t out of the question. Their efforts this season are more impressive considering they only remained in the third tier as 1860 Munich were not given a license. In this season’s DFB-Pokal, Paderborn have already knocked out two opponents from the 2. Bundesliga – namely a 2-1 win over St. Pauli and 2-0 over VfL Bochum. Thus far, they’ve won nine of their ten home games in the third tier but, in 27 DFB-Pokal runs, SCP have only reached the quarter final once.

Away once again

Ingolstadt have a similar record in the DFB-Pokal. If Ingolstadt were to reach the last eight, it would be for the second time in their history – having achieved the same milestone in the 2013/2014 season.

Ingolstadt have accustomed themselves to playing away from home in the DFB-Pokal. The club’s last 14 DFB-Pokal ties have been away fixtures with 6 of them being victories. The last DFB-Pokal clash in front of their own fans came in August 2010 against Karlsruher SC.

A full house and full support

The hosts can depend on a full house to get behind them on Tuesday evening. In recent weeks, over 11,000 tickets have been sold.

The clash between Paderborn and Ingolstadt is the only round of sixteen tie without a Bundesliga team’s involvement and is somewhat of a novelty. In the Bundesliga 2, the record lies in favour of the hosts who have won four of their eight ties.
