Paderborn in high anticipation before VfL duel

After their strong start to the season in the third tier, SC Paderborn are looking to carry their league form into the 2nd round of the DFB-Pokal. Paderborn face VfL Bochum on October 24th at 18:30 CEST and are going into the match high on confidence.

Under Steffen Baumgart, Paderborn have lost only one match out of 17, having stayed in the league because 1860 Münich couldn’t afford the third-tier license. Paderborn can’t boast much of a cup record, though they upset FC St. Pauli in the first round, winning 2-1. In their 27 DFB-Pokal seasons, Paderborn have only reached the quarter-finals once. They have been knocked out ten times in the second round and 16 times in matchday 1.

Full house expected

You have to go back a while for success in Bochum’s cup history. They are currently without a manager, following the departure of Ismail Atalan. Bochum have reached the DFB-Pokal final twice, losing both times – 4-1 to FC Köln in 1968 and 1-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1988. Two years ago, they bowed out in the quarter-finals against eventual winners Bayern Münich. Bochum dispatched fifth-tier, FC Nöttingen 5-2 in this year’s first round.

Paderborn can look forward to a full-house for next week’s encounter. The club has already sold 11,000 of the 15,000 tickets and only a small amount of the away allocation remains. The fans will be further buoyed following the team’s 7-1 destruction of Werder Bremen II on matchday 12. This is a match-up that normally yields a winner. In the past six encounters between the two sides, there has only ben one draw (Bochum have one three, Paderborn two) .
