Osnabrück eliminate HSV and Schweinfurt defeat Sandhausen

Vfl Osnabrück sprung the biggest surprise of the first round of the DFB Pokal. The third tier side won 3-1 against Hamburger SV, despite having only 10 men, in a repeat of their 2009 fixture. Also, 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 unexpectedly defeated second tier SV Sandhausen 2-1. RB Leipzig cruised past SF Dorfmerkingen and Hannover 96 defeated Bonner SC, despite going behind. Wolfsburg narrowly beat Eintracht Norderstedt and Bochum’s rapid start ensured they progressed into the second round. Fürth also started well to beat SV Morlautern 5-0, Ingolstadt scored late to beat 1860 Munich and second tier Union Berlin needed extra-time to see off 1. FC Saarbrücken.

Osnabruck eliminate HSV

When Marcel Appiah was sent off in the 18th minute, it looked like it’d be a long afternoon for VfL Osnabrück. However, HSV failed to bring the game under control and instead Halil Savran put the hosts into the lead following a swift counter attack. The stadium was in fine voice as fans hoped Osnabrück could repeat their victory over HSV in 2009. In the second half, Osnabrück did just that. Heider doubled the underdogs’ lead before Arslan trebled it. Bobby Wood’s goal from the penalty spot counted for little as Osnabrück won 3-1.

Schweinfurt defeat Sandhausen

Despite going 1-0 down courtesy of Sandhausen striker Lucas Höler’s goal, Schweinfurt persevered. After the break, Marius Willsch scored the equaliser before Steffen Krautschneider scored the winning goal for the fourth division side.

Leipzig comfortably beat Dorfmerkingen

Champions League contenders RB Leipzig put their stamp on proceedings in this DFB Pokal fixture early on as Marcel Sabitzer rocked home after four minutes. In the second half, Leipzig’s dominance really shone through as Sabitzer got back on the scoresheet alongside teammates Werner, Poulsen and Keita. The final scoreline was 5-0.

Hannover come from behind to beat Bonner SC

Fourth-tier Bonn threatened to pull off a shock in the DFB Pokal. Lars Lokotsch finished off a lovely move to put the minnows ahead and Hannover 96 found it difficult to break down a resolute Bonner SC defence. However, the equaliser eventually came and the goals kept coming for the 96ers with the game ending 4-2.

Wolfsburg squeeze past Eintracht Norderstedt

Wolfsburg required a lot of patience to defeat a stubborn Eintracht Norderstedt. After a quiet first half, Norderstedt’s Philipp Kock’s almost broke the deadlock but hit the post. Eventually, Camacho headed home the winner for the favourites and put them into the second round.

Bochum beat Nöttingen

Ismail Atalan’s Bochum flew out of the blocks in Karlsruhe against FC Nöttingen. Görkem Saglam put Bochum ahead after 30 seconds and it was 2-0 after 3 minutes. Nöttingen replied from the penalty spot but were unable to turn it around. Bochum’s Hinterseer bagged a brace and, though Bilger scored his side’s second, Jannik Bandowski put the game beyond any doubt, as the match eventually ended 5-2.

Fürth go further in the DFB Pokal

Philipp Hofmann’s early brace eased Furth into what many believed would be a tricky fixture against Morlautern. The third goal after the break put the game beyond doubt before Dursun and Ernst got on the scoresheet for Furth as well.

Ingolstadt record narrow victory in Munich

Spectators at the Grünwalder Stadion saw an intense start to 1860 Munich’s match against local rivals Ingolstadt. The recent Bundesliga side took the lead in the 19th minute putting aside their woes in the league. Felix Weber’s equaliser for 1860 meant extra time seemed to be on the horizon. However, Stefan Kutschke scored the winner for the second division side from the penalty spot.

Union Berlin need extra-time to go through

Union Berlin goalkeeper, Daniel Mesenhöler, was crucial in Union Berlin’s progression into the second round of the DFB Pokal. The goalie saved Manuel Zeitz’s penalty shortly after Fabian Schönheim had put the Berliners 1-0 up. However, a few minutes later, Mesenhöler was powerless to stop Kevin Behrens’ equaliser which forced extra time. In extra time, Simon Hedlund’s goal gave Union Berlin a hard earned victory.
