Olympic winners second in world rankings

Germany’s Women’s team have been ranked second in the world after the FIFA World Rankings were published on Friday, behind World Cup winners USA. The Olympic winners ousted the Americans from the top spot after two years back in March, and currently have 2111 points. The USA are on a points total of 2118 at the top of the table, whilst France are in third with 2076 points.

Four wins were decisive for the USA’s jump to the top, whilst Steffi Jones’ girls only managed one win in the SheBelieves Cup, which came against Canada (2-1). However, Canada themselves managed to move up a spot to fourth (2027 points), as did Australia (7th, 1976 points) and Germany’s next opponents Brazil (8th, 1971 points). Sweden fell three places down to 9th (1956 points).

A friendly against Brazil in Sandhausen (4th July 17:45 CEST) awaits the Olympic winners prior to them making the journey to the Netherlands for the European Championship (July 16th to August 6th). The day after the friendly sees Steffi Jones name her final squad for the EURO, and on July 12th the girls will make the journey to the Netherlands where the defending champions will prepare for their Group B opening game against Sweden in Breda on July 17th. Germany face Italy in Tilburg on July 21st and Russia in Utrecht on July 25th. All three games are scheduled for an 20:45 kick off.

The next edition of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings will be released later this year on September 2017.
