Off to Marbella with Maier: Women’s training camp starts on Saturday

The women’s national team will begin their World Cup preparations this Saturday. Head coach Silvia Neid and her team are set to travel to Marbella for warm-weather training in Spain. The World Cup will be held in Canada between 6th June and 5th July.

“We want to use the time to improve tactical understanding and fitness levels,” said Neid. The team will start with a performance analysis session in Frankfurt before flying to Malaga on Saturday evening. They will travel to Marbella by bus. Two training sessions daily are scheduled from Sunday to Wednesday. The team will return home on Thursday morning.

Leonie Maier returns and Margarita Gidion joins for the first time

After being sidelined for almost a year with a cruciate ligament rupture, Bayern München full back Leonie Maier is set to return to the squad. Saskia Batrusiak will also be going to the training camp, despite not being part of the official squad. The experienced 1. FFC Frankfurt centre back has asked her club for permission to continue her rehabilitation programme following an ACL tear together with the Germany team.

The European Champions’ injury worries are far from over though. They are still missing Wolfsburg’s Women’s World Player of the Year Nadine Keßler and Bayern München’s Lena Lotzen. Furthermore, Paris St. Germain's Josephine Henning had to pull out of the squad on short notice due to a thigh problem. Under-20 World Champion and SGS Essen player Margarita Gidion takes her place. It’s the first time that the 20-year-old will have trained with the senior team.

Tough test against Brazil

After the training camp in Marbella, the DFB-Team have the opportunity to pit themselves against first-class opponents at the Algarve Cup in Portugal from 4th to 11th March. Then on 8th April (18:00 CET), they have friendly scheduled against Brazil in Fürth as part of their World Cup preparations. Another friendly will be played on 18th May. The team will leave for Canada on 31st May.

It will be the first Women’s World Cup featuring 24 teams. Germany have been drawn in Group B and will play Côte d’Ivoire (7th June), Norway (11th June, both in Ottawa) and Thailand (15th June in Winnipeg).
