Özil’s kick lifts Germany into round of 16

Germany’s quest for a fourth World Cup title continues. By beating Ghana 1-0 (0-0) in front of 85,000 fans at sold-out Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, Germany qualified for the round of 16, where the Mannschaft will meet England this Sunday.

„The intensity of the match was tremendous. We did not always perform according to plan. But we have reached the next round, which is all that counts tonight“, said German coach Joachim Löw.

Mesut Özil’s shot from the top of the penalty box after an hour played made the difference in a game, in which both sides had ample scoring opportunities. Ghana finishes second in Group D and also reached the round of sixteen.

Germany’s newly nominated forward Cacau (3.), who replaced suspended Miroslav Klose, came up with the first opportunity. But Ghana’s goalkeeper Richard Kingson prevailed.

His own teammate Jonathan Mensah almost got the better off Kingson in minute ten, when he deflected a cross by Lukas Podolski. If not for Bastian Schweinsteiger’s courageous effort, Ghana had taken the lead on a scoring opportunity by Asamoah Gyan. Germain captain Philipp Lahm had to save for his goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (26.) after a header by Gyan.

After halftime, Germany managed to control the pace. Then Özil struck the ball perfectly from roughly 18 meters, which triggered a collective sigh of relief throughout the country. Löw inserted Piotr Trochowski, Toni Kroos and Marcell Jansen, then referee Carlos Simon from Brazil blew the final whistle.
