Özil's Arsenal beat Man Utd, Can's Liverpool held at home

Arsenal and Germany World Cup winner Mesut Özil kept their hopes of gaining a Champions League place alive as they won 2-0 at home to Manchester United. Arsenal remain in sixth position in the table on 63 points, six points off fourth but have a game in hand on the two Manchester clubs above them and two games in hand on Liverpool in third.

Ex-Borussia Mönchengladbach man Granit Xhaka (54’) and Danny Welbeck (57’) scored for the Londoners. Germany World Cup winners Per Mertesacker and Shkodran Mustafi missed the match through injury.

Germany international Emre Can’s Liverpool side was held to a 0-0 draw by Southampton as they stutter towards a Champions League spot. James Milner missed a penalty for Jürgen Klopp’s men. The Merseysiders remain third in the table, however, on 70 points, one point ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand.
