Özil through to FA Cup quarterfinals with Arsenal

Mesut Özil has reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with Arsenal thanks to a 2-0 win over Championship side Middlesbrough that was never in doubt. Oliver Giroud scored a quickfire brace shortly before the half-hour mark in front of 59,823 spectators at the Emirates Stadium. Germany international Özil played the full 90 minutes, while World Champion Per Mertesacker was rested by manager Arsène Wenger. “Boro” had knocked out English Champions Manchester City in the previous round.

Klose remains in the Champions League hunt with Lazio

Miroslav Klose’s Lazio side are still in touching distance of the Champions League spots after a 1-0 win over Udinese on Sunday. Antonio Candreva scored a 24th-minute penalty for the visitors from Rome, who have now moved up to fifth. Klose & Co. remain one point short of a spot good enough to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition.

Elsewhere in Italy, Lukas Podolski’s Inter Milan celebrated a 4-1 win over relegation candidates Atalanta. Manager Roberto Mancini once again opted to use Podolski and former Bayern winger Xherdan Shaqiri in his starting line-up. The Switzerland international opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first minute, his first goal for Inter. Podolksi failed to really get going and wasn’t able to add any impetus to the away side’s game. However, a Fredy Guarin brace and a Rodrigo Palacio goal were enough for Milan to secure the three points.
