Mesut Özil demonstrated his impressive pre-season form with Arsenal, chipping in with two assists and a goal for himself in the Gunners’ frantic 6-0 win over French top-flight side Olympique Lyon.
Özil set up Oliver Giroud for the opener in the first half with a free kick, before assisting Aaron Ramsey for the fourth goal with a fine pass. After the break, the 26-year-old netted from a spectacular direct free kick himself. Özil also set up Alex Iwobi to fire home from a free kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Iwobi and Santi Cazorla were the other goalscorers for the Gunners. Özil’s former national team teammate Per Mertesacker played the full duration, enjoying a quiet evening with the rest of the Arsenal back line.
