Arsenal suffered a major set-back to their Premier League title ambitions, losing 3-2 at Manchester United despite a solid performance by Mesut Özil. Arsenal now trail table toppers Leicester City by five points while Man United, once again without the injured Bastian Schweinsteiger, climbed into fifth place.
Özil bags 18th assist of the season
18-year-old Marcus Rashford’s brace within the first half-hour gave United a 2-0 lead. Remarkably this was only three days after having scored a brace on his Old Trafford debut in United’s 5-1 Europa League victory over FC Midtjylland.
Danny Welbeck pulled one back for Arsenal shortly before half-time, getting his head on the end of a Mesut Özil cross - the 18th assist of the season for the Germany international. United restored their two-goal advantage through Ander Herrera midway through the second half. Arsenal responded quickly with Özil’s volley keeping the visitors in the game but ultimately the comeback fell short. World Champion Per Mertesacker was an unused sub for Arsenal in this game.
