Özil leads Arsenal to the top of the league

Thanks to yet another outstanding performance from Mesut Özil, Arsenal have grabbed top spot in the English Premier League. Arsenal beat newly-promoted Bournemouth 2-0 in front of 60,000 spectators at the Emirates and overtook Leicester City at the top of the league after passing up the opportunity to do so on Boxing Day. Leicester can, however, retake the lead in the title race on Tuesday when they play Manchester City.

Mesut Özil had a large part to play in the victory, the 27-year-old getting another assist, providing the cross from the corner flag for Gabriel to head in. Özil is now just four behind Henry's all-time assist record in the Premier League with 16, and with more than half a season left, it is very likely that he will break that record. The Germany international topped off his performance and the game with the goal that made it 2-0, securing the victory for the Gunners. Both Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker played all 90 minutes in the win that saw Arsenal leapfrog Leicester.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was in action for Manchester United today when they hosted Chelsea. The clash between the two English giants was important for both, but Schweinsteiger was unable to lead his side to victory as the game ended 0-0.

Meanwhile, three former Bundesliga stars helped Stoke City to a stunning 4-3 victory away to Everton. The goalscorers for the Potters were Xherdan Shaqiri, Joselu and Marko Arnautovic, who got the winning goal in injury time from the penalty spot. The win saw Stoke overtake Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool in the league table.
