Özil: "I’m definitely staying at Real"

German international Mesut Özil has emphatically quashed the rumours surrounding his future in Spain. "I’m contracted to Real Madrid until 2016 and I’m definitely staying at Real," said the 24-year-old today in the Spanish capital. "There has been a lot of speculation in the past few weeks. I’m flattered about the interest in me, but the most important thing is that I’m very happy here. I get on well with my team-mates, the coach has faith in me and I’ve got ambitious targets."

Speaking at a presentation for his new supplier adidas, Özil clarified what these targets consisted of: "When you play for a club as big as Real, your aim is never to finish second. Our goal is to win titles, and I’m confident about that. After all, we’re the biggest club in the world."

The prolific midfielder is also aiming for continuity in the national team. "I really hope Joachim Löw will carry on. You only have to look at what he’s done for the team in the last few years, the kind of football the national side now plays and how successful it is. All over the world, teams recognise and respect us." Özil also singled out international colleague and Schalke 04 attacking midfielder Julian Draxler for praise, saying: "He’s extremely talented and is already a key player for Schalke at only 19."
