Özil fires Arsenal into the Champions League

World Champions Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker were involved as Arsenal confirmed a place in next season’s Champions League group stage. The Gunners beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 on Sunday to seal third place. They finished the campaign five points clear of record champions Manchester United.

Theo Walcott was the star of the show for Wenger’s side. The England winger grabbed a hat trick (4’, 14’ and 37’). Jack Wilshere scored their other goal.

Things didn’t go to plan for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who played his final game for the Merseyside club on Sunday. Germany U21 international Emre Can was also in the starting line-up for the match against Stoke City. The Potters won the game 6-1 although Gerrard did get his name on the scoresheet.

Mustafi reaches the Champions League

Shkodran Mustafi and his Valencia teammates will be playing Champions League football next year. They beat UD Almería 3-2, which ensured that they finished ahead of Sevilla in the table.

FC Barcelona, who didn’t play Marc-André ter Stegen, ended the season with a 2-2 draw against Deportivo La Coruña. Barca face Juventus in the Champions League final, which takes place in Berlin, next month. Toni Kroos was in Real Madrid’s starting line-up as they beat Getafe 7-3.

Gomez absent for Fiorentina

Fiorentina, who were without Mario Gomez, remain on course to reach next year’s Europea League. They beat Palermo 3-2 to strengthen their grip on fifth place. Lukas Podolski missed Inter Milan’s 3-2 defeat against Genoa due to injury.
