Özil and Mertesacker shine as Arsenal defend FA Cup title

FA Cup winners, World Champions, and now also record cup winners. The beaming Mesut Özil and goalscorer Per Mertesacker have capped off a fantastic year of football with yet another title. The German duo and club side Arsenal FC triumphed in the FA Cup final against Aston Villa in a fully deserved 4-0 win – 321 days after Germany’s World Cup win in Rio De Janeiro and 378 days after last year’s World Cup victory.

The Gunners dominated from start to finish in front of a sold-out Wembley crowd, the “holy grail” of English football. Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud wrapped up the win for the holders to seal a record twelfth FA Cup win since its inception in 1872. Arsenal are now outright record holders ahead of Manchester United (11).

Manager Arsène Wenger, now the record holder with six FA Cup titles, put faith in his German stars: Özil, who statistically created a chance every 18 minutes in cup competitions in the 2014/15 season, and the rarely tested centre back Mertesacker, who wore the captain’s armband.

Arsenal were on top from the start, creating several chances, with Theo Walcott and Laurent Koscielny both coming close in the opening eight minutes. In the final last year against Hull City, Arsenal went 2-0 down before turning the game around to win 3-2.

Özil sets up Walcott goal

Özil played like a man possessed and tore the Villa defence apart. Early in the first half he set up Aaron Ramsey, who only just missed target. Two minutes later, Özil set up Walcott brilliantly for the opening goal. Christian Benteke, Villa’s outstanding star, barely had a touch of the ball. In the stands crossing his fingers was the Duke of Cambridge and FA President, Prince William, a famous Villa fan who after the game had to hand the famous silver trophy over to the triumphant Gunners.

Walcott’s opener came from a move started by a Nacho Monreal cross, before Sanchez doubled his side’s lead with a swerving thunderbolt from long range. Mertesacker put Villa out of sight with a headed goal and Giroud wrapped things up in added time.
