Özil and Gomez among the scorers

World Cup winner Mesut Özil and international counterpart Mario Gomez were on the scoresheet for their respective clubs this weekend. Özil grabbed the opener as Arsenal beat Bournemouth 2-0 in England whilst Gomez netted a brace in Besiktas’ 2-0 win over Gaziantepspor.

Özil’s seventh of the season gave the Gunners the lead over the Cherries. The lead was doubled seconds later courtesy of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (24’). Per Mertesacker was an unused substitute in the match. The result ended a run of four games without a win and means Arsenal are now third in the table, five points behind surprise leaders Leicester City.

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea earlier this evening. Bastian Schweinsteiger wasn’t in the United squad for the match.

Gomez nets twice

Mario Gomez grabbed his 14th and 15th goals of the season on Sunday and he is now level with Samuel Eto'o (Antalyaspor) at the top of the scoring charts. Besiktas’ other goals were scored by former HSV player Gökhan Töre and Oguzhan Özyakup.

Besiktas are currently second in the table with 44 points, two adrift of leaders and local rivals Fenerbahce (46). However, Gomez and Co. have two games in hand.

Juve win without Khedira

Juventus remain hot on the heels of leaders Napoli, despite Sami Khedira’s absence. They beat Frosinone Calcio thanks to goals from Juan Cuadrado (73’) and Paulo Dybala (90’). Napoli beat Carpi to maintain their two-point advantage at the top of the table.

Mustafi picks up a booking in defeat

Things don’t go to plan for Shkodran Mustafi in the Spanish top flight once again. His Valencia side lost 1-0 to Real Betis, with Ruben Castro netting the winner four minutes into the second half. Mustafi completed the game but was booked.
