Özil and Arsenal miss out on second win

World Cup winner Mesut Özil and Arsenal missed out on what would have been their second win of the new premier league season. The third match day saw Arsène Wenger’s side play out a high quality 0-0 draw against FC Liverpool. They did so without Per Mertesacker, who was ruled out through illness shortly before the match. Arsenal now find themselves ninth, six places behind Liverpool (seven points), who named Germany U21 player Emre Can and former Hoffenheim midfielder Firmino in their starting XI.

Meanwhile, Lukas Podolski and Galatasary have not had the best of starts over in Istanbul, losing 1-2 to German sporting director Jürgen Röber’s FK Osmanlispor. Podolski played the entire 90 minutes, but could not stop the champions slipping to 13th position in the table. Serdar Deliktas (29') put the guests ahead, before Selcuk Inan equalised for Galatasary (41'). Gabriel Torje (50') scored the decisive goal, sealing the win for the visitors.

Spectacular match between Arsenal and Liverpool

Those who watched the clash in London enjoyed a high-quality spectacle, which saw Liverpool get off to a better start, asking all of the questions early on. After an inch-perfect pass from Santi Cazorla however, Aaron Ramsey had the ball in the net (8') – incorrectly ruled out for offside. Liverpool then managed to get on top of the game, Can and the rest of the midfield dictating the pace of the game. Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech was called upon multiple times in this period, and he certainly delivered, more than justifying the 10 million pound fee paid to Chelsea for his services. The best chance fell to Christian Benteke (39'), who managed to get a shot on goal after being set up by Firmino.

After the break, the London team began to turn the screw, putting real pressure on the Liverpool defence. Özil was responsible for initiating the majority of Arsenal’s attacks, and after nice build-up play from Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez (70') hit the post. Liverpool goalkeeper Mignolet needed to be at his best to keep the scores level.

Arsenal upped the pressure once again, with Wenger introducing speedy winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The England international had the last chance too (90+2'), Mignolet getting down well though to make the save.
