No goals in Mainz

Jürgen Kramny, Stuttgart’s interim manager, travelled to his old club on Friday night for the Bundesliga game against Mainz and left with a point. Matchday 16 began with a tight game in which neither side could assert themselves.

It has been more than ten years since Stuttgart won in Mainz, and it stayed that way. The away side began the game well, looking very dangerous and getting forward. A number of chances were dealt with by Mainz keeper Karius and the home side were unable to create many opportunities of their own. The first chance of the game came for Maxim. He was played in by Werner but his shot was too weak to be dangerous. Mainz got lucky again, as Rupp’s shot from outside the box ten minutes later struck the post and went out of danger. Mainz were certainly relieved to go into the half-time break at 0-0.

The second half began much as the first did, but gradually Mainz got into it. Their best chances fell to Muto and De Blasis. The former was a shot after Muto beat his man inside the box, but it was central and Tyton got a strong hand to it. De Blasis’ attempt was a semi-volley from close range, which Tyton, again, did well to turn wide.

The result does not change the league table, despite both teams taking a point. Mainz remain 6th while Stuttgart are still stuck in 17th.
