No Anton or Baumgartl in final U21 EUROs squad

Head coach Stefan Kuntz has submitted his final squad for the European Under-21 Championship in Poland (16th-30th June) to UEFA. Of the 25-man provisional squad that travelled to the training camp in Grassau, Hannover 96’s Waldermar Anton and VfB Stuttgart’s Timo Baumgartl are the only two to not make the final squad. Both players will travel home on Wednesday morning.

"It was a very difficult decision for our coaching team," said Kuntz. "Waldermar and Timo gave very good accounts of themselves. The squad situation has forced the decision. With Jonathan Tah and Niklas Stark returning to fitness, and two good central defenders in Marc-Oliver Kempf and Gideon Jung, as well as Thilo Kehrer who can also play there, our decision was a position-specific one. I told the team that it was reflected well on them that two such good players couldn’t travel." Anton and Baumgartl were born in 1996 so they are eligible for the next U21 EUROs.

The squad will continue preparations at the training camp in Graussau at Chiemsee until Friday, before meeting up on Tuesday, 13th June in Frankfurt. The team then fly to Krakow on 14th June.
