Niklas Süle: "Keep Austria at bay"

Matchday 10, just three weeks ago, is still well in the memory for Niklas Süle. Hamburger SV left Kraichgau with all three points back then courtesy of a goal from former Germany U21 player Pierre Lasogga. “The game summed up our season so far, we could have simply done better,” said Süle. The TSG man has been on pitch for the full 90 minutes of every Bundesliga matchday to date this campaign and has developed into a regular player.

DFB manager Horst Hrubesch added: “Niklas is a great lad. It’s just superb how he’s developed. He fought back after his serious injury and has also become a key player for us too.” Plausible then, that 20-year-old Süle has played the full distance in all the matches for the U21 side and has been one of the stand-out performers. And that’s even though he’s one of the younger players in the Germany U21 team as he was born in 1995.

There was bade news for Süle in December 2014. He tore his cruciate ligament and was out for several weeks. He worked hard for his comeback though, gave everything in pre-season training and worked his way back to a regular spot in the Hoffenheim side. And in the U21s too. Süle speaks on his path back and the big game against Austria in EURO qualification on Tuesday in Fürth.

DFB.de: Niklas, you’re an ever-present here with the U21 side. No one has racked up more minutes on pitch than you.

Niklas Süle: I’m happy about the faith shown in me, both at club and international level. And also about the fact that I could put my injury behind me. I’m feeling super fit and will try to repay the faith with performances on the pitch.

DFB.de: Horst Hrubesch has underlined your development both on the pitch and as a person.

Süle: We’ve got a great atmosphere here in the side. It’s simply fun to run out for the U21s. Furthermore we’ve got a really strong team here and have the potential to achieve something special here.

DFB.de: There isn’t too much of a leap to the senior side either with manager Joachim Löw calling up Leroy Sané of late.

Süle: We were all delighted for Leroy and are looking forward to seeing him at the Austria game again. But of course it’s every footballer’s dream to play in the senior side and I wish everyone of us that we can achieve that here. Now Austria await us and something important is at stake, namely on the pitch.

DFB.de: Horst Hrubesch has stated that the goal is and remains top spot in the group.

Süle: Indeed it is. Both teams have won all their games to date. We’re level; on points and want to keep the Austrians at bay on Tuesday evening, that’s for sure. We’re looking forward to the game a lot.
