Niersbach: “Udo Lattek was a legend”

The German Football Federation (DFB) is mourning the loss of Udo Lattek. The most successful German club coach has passed away at a care home in Köln at the age of 80. “Udo Lattek was not only the most successful manager in Bundesliga history but he was a prominent figure in German football,” explained DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach. “The DFB honoured him in 2012 for his services to football over many decades. His teams and the titles he won will remain in our memory, as well as his direct but always charming nature. Udo Lattek was already a legend and we’ll miss him.”

Lattek led Bayern München, Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Barcelona to 14 titles, including three European Cups. He also managed Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and was Sporting Director at 1. FC Köln. He was assistant manager with the Germany national team at the World Cup in 1966 when Helmut Schön’s side finished runners-up to England.

Bayern München Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge paid appreciation to Lattek’s achievements in German football in a statement on the club’s website. “The news of Udo Lattek’s death has hit us hard. His name is associated closely with the rise of FC Bayern München during the successful 70s,” said Rummenigge. “Udo Lattek was one of the most successful managers in German football and was a huge personality within the sport for decades, both nationally and internationally. We’ve lost an FC Bayern great, a great coach and a friend.”
