Niersbach on "Gaucho dance": "Absolutely no disrespect was intended"

There has been much discussion about the national team’s "Gaucho dance" at their homecoming party on Berlin’s Fan Mile, particularly in Argentina. As a result, DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach has commented on the matter.

Mr Niersbach said: "I know from speaking with Oliver Bierhoff that the idea came to the players as a spontaneous expression of the emotion and joy they were feeling. They’re all totally decent, fair sportsmen who would never make fun of anyone – they simply wanted to celebrate enthusiastically with the fans. We are sorry if this gave anybody a false or ambiguous impression."

He continued: "I will also be writing a letter to my Argentinian counterpart Julio Grondona to make it clear once more that our actions were in no way meant to be disrespectful. We have the utmost respect for Argentina, a strong relationship with their football association and look forward to playing them again soon at our international friendly in Düsseldorf."
