Niersbach and Löw head DFB delegation for Chancellor visit

On Monday, a DFB delegation comprising president Wolfgang Niersbach, general secretary Helmut Sandrock, national team coach Joachim Löw, national team manager Oliver Bierhoff, assistant coach Hansi Flick and goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke were personally invited to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Understandably, the primary topic of discussion at the private meeting in the Federal Chancellery was football, particularly this summer’s World Cup and Germany’s chances at the tournament in Brazil. The DFB delegation also presented the Chancellor with a shirt signed by the national team and a World Cup ball from DFB supplier adidas.

The Chancellor’s support of Die Mannschaft has been well documented for many years. Angela Merkel visited Joachim Löw’s side at their base in Sopot, Poland, ahead of EURO 2012, and travelled to South Africa in 2010 to watch the team’s World Cup quarter-final against Argentina in Cape Town before taking in a European Championship qualifier against Turkey in Berlin later the same year.
